Binod Shah, a refugee from Bhutan, went to church, got married and started an auto shop in Twin Falls, Idaho. But an arrest record got him caught in the ICE dragnet
This is enraging… They’re so close to realizing that they don’t practice what they’re literally preaching.
Beyond that it’s all just the standard “When I make a mistake, it’s because of circumstances; when you do, it’s because of character” BS they use to justify voting for their own oppressor.
“People who’ve been conservative their whole lives are even showing up at liberal protests against ICE raids,”
Trump. Is. NOT. A. Conservative. He’s an authoritarian whose politics change with the last person he spoke to. Conservatives have been duped since he captured their party. So many of them have spent over 10 f’ing years now just voting for him because of the little f’ing “r” next to his name while thinking that everything is normal. Well it’s not normal and your husband gets deported. Be happy he wasn’t violently arrested and sent to a torture prison (yet).
Conservatives have never had a coherent set of principles besides serving the ruling class. Ruling-class unearned privilege is the thing conservatism was founded to conserve. Any other principles they espouse have changed over time, either because the interests of the ruling class have evolved, or because the conservatives are just being sanctimonious hypocrites and saying whatever it takes to gain power.
So, yes, Trump is a conservative. He’s serving the malefactors of great wealth, including himself.
This is exactly the sort of bullshit that landed us with Trump as a president to begin with. Liberals and Republicans have truly started to believe the lies they tell about the other side. Then can then justify doing “exceptional things” to defeat the “evil other team”.
“Liberals have never had a coherent set of principles besides government control of everything and limiting freedoms”
Sounds stupid right? Well that’s what they believe of you. And it’s just as stupid as what you believe of “them”.
It’s a lost identity, is what it is. American conservatives will give you 4 different definitions of what conservatism is supposed to be, and leftists will give you an additional 6 more.
What it’s supposed to be is a political counter to the progressivism of the left. Lefties push progressive rhetoric and the conservatives keep them in check to prevent them from blowing up the economy.
Except, in practice, we haven’t had a conservative leader that actually knows the value of a dollar bill in (at least) over a century, even prior to that it was primarily the political party of “I want to keep slaves and I’m not going to let you stop me”, and in the modern day it’s been entirely co-opted by the Christian Church and its tireless quest to completely enslave every human being on the planet.
Conservatism was originally founded in the late 18th century to oppose Enlightenment ideas of rule of law and meritocracy. Those ideas were being promoted by new-money capitalists and the striving middle class. Progressives had very little traction back then, except in short bursts. The 18th-century revolutions were led by the bourgeoisie, allied in some cases with the working class. The leaders of the American revolution were mainly large landowners, and those of the French revolution lawyers and journalists.
The only strong progressive movement in the US was the labor movement at the beginning of the 20th century. Both US parties committed vast resources to suppress and persecute that movement. FDR later co-opted some of their ideas in order to reform capitalism enough to prevent the left seizing power. But for most of US history, there hasn’t been enough progressivism in the US for the conseratives or the liberals to bother spending much effort opposing it.
Well, it depends on who you ask. Conservatism is maintaining the status quo and tradition, hence the name. But Republicans aren’t aiming for that, they want to actively remove protections, ostensibly as a return to tradition, but the historic time they describe never existed. Therefore, because they are destroying, they are regressives.
Currently, the party taking the “hold on now, let’s not be hasty, this is how we’ve always done it” stance is the Democrats. And we don’t have a major progressive party.

What is a conservative in the USA?
Someone pining for the 1950s. Fear of God, nuclear energy, suburbs, all 50 states complete, and the apple pie.
High taxes and unionisation? Nice. Get to it!

Still is.
