I basically built an electronics lab from cheap AliExpress goods. Mostly the parts for projects. Boards, chips, nuts, bolts, boxes. All the bits needed to build embedded systems.

The big stuff (tools, power sources, lights) we’re US sources for quality. Most everything else was Chinese junk. I could get five copies of a board from China for the same price as one from the US. I made it to platinum level with over 1000 total orders. When I could order a tiny thing cheap, have it arrive eventually (back then it was often 6-8 weeks), but essentially free shipping I was happy to build up my supplies over time.

Now? No idea who could afford to do the same thing. I’m not rich, but I managed to run whole IoT classes out of my garage with 20+ projects underway. Tinkering gets yet more expensive.

Or just forget in a few days.

It is, and I’m well aware of just how hard it is to be in my kind of position. I’m leaving very soon for a job overseas.

It took 12 years of college. It took massive debts that I spent a decade earning to pay off. It took a further 15 years of competing in academia to become a desirable candidate for the job. I’m taking a serious pay cut and spending the saving from a decade of work to make the move.

Its a privilege, but having come from a family that valued education, but had little money to help me, I kinda feel like I’ve earned it. Decades of effort on my part went into this.

You can be pissed all you want, but I’ve paid my dues and I’m spending them on a better and safer future for my children away from the US Banana Republic of Dumbfuckistan.

The important piece of this to me is this: She made $1 mil on OnlyFans and $42k/year as a teacher. She wants to be a teacher despite making plenty of money from other sources. This tells me that unless you have other evidence of impropriety she’s someone we want in the classroom. It also reinforces my stance, along with plenty of other studies that have been performed, that a universal basic income won’t stop people from working.

Pay people better and we’ll just keep working because we like it. It’s part of being human, but we shouldn’t be suffering to survive at the same time.
