My interpretation is that he’s trying to fit in with the rest of the billionaire class, which is almost entirely on board with Republicanism.

    I’m guessing Bill Gates has a lot of contacts at universities and in politics, so he will probably have good insights into the science behind this statement. However, you should read the New York Times article, because it’s talks about many other things that Bill Gates is addressing; basically he is making a U-turn on his previous comments about climate change. Concerning this one statement, I tend to agree with him, based on all the papers that I’ve been reading, humanity is currently in an overshoot phase. Within the next few centuries, we will witness a dramatic collapse of at least 95% of the human population. I’m guessing a few hundred thousand people will survive, and they will have a much more primitive life than we do - let’s just hope, that they will learn from the past. The main task of battling climate change at this moment is to make sure the human suffering is reduced as much as possible, as the climate collapses.
