A federal judge ruled Wednesday it is unconstitutional for the Trump administration to require states to cooperate with immigration enforcement in order to get some Federal Emergency Management Agency grants — a legal setback in the administration’s push to revoke funding to “sanctuary” cities and states.
U.S. District Judge William Smith of Rhode Island ruled in favor of 20 mostly Democratic states that had sued FEMA, accusing the administration of “holding critical emergency preparedness and response funding hostage” unless they assist immigration agents.
The decision is likely to be appealed.
We literally fought a civil war to decide that …
The slave states wanted Lincoln and the Fed to either send federal agents to the free states to capture any Black person and transport them to the slave states to be a slave, or to be able to force free states to do it on their own.
Lincoln said the Fed couldn’t do that, just like the fed couldn’t outlaw slavery
Slave states started a civil war over it, and as an economic sanction well into the war, Lincoln outlawed slavery
If people understood American history, they’d be a lot more pissed and shit wouldn’t have gotten to this point
Expanding on this –
It’s important to note that the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves only in Confederate-controlled states, and not in Union border states, as well as welcoming any of those freed people into the Union Army. This served the multiple purposes of: creating chaos in the Confederacy; negatively impacting the economy of the Confederacy; forcing states in rebellion to expend more resources on controlling the enslaved people within their borders (and by extension, fewer resources on waging war); and increasing membership in the Union Army.
Sure it did all those things.
But the main reason was Southern plantations were being sold to wealthy Europeans for cheap prices to fund the war effort. Allowing the war to drag on.
Outlawing slavery in those states made the land practically worthless unless the South won.
The wealthy Europeans buying up Southern plantations for dimes on the dollar knew the North would win, it was just too good an investment to pass up knowing how profitable slave plantations would be after the war.
By outlawing slavery Lincoln stopped the influx of cash and resources into the South and was able to end the war months, maybe even years, earlier.
The ethics of slavery never factored into the decision to outlaw slavery.
Just like ending the Holocaust wasn’t why we joined WW2, and spreading democracy isn’t why we went to Vietnam, Irag, Afghanistan, or anywhere else.
We need to start being real about why things happen instead of blind patriotism and “we always do what’s right” because that’s rarely the real reason
